Clare Meynell
Midwife ( Rtd), IBCLC International Board Certified lactation Consultant
Clare has had a long career as a midwife and infant feeding lead and became an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant in 1996. She has been supporting new mothers for 30 years. Clare is a member of the UK World Breast Feeding Trends Initiative (WBTi) steering group and co presented the first report for the UK in Parliament in November 2016 and the second report in June 2025.
The global WBTi (World Breastfeeding Trends initiative) project, set up by IBFAN, has Core Groups in 100 countries around the world. The groups conduct assessments and report the extent of the implementation of the WHO Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding recommendations in their own countries. The WBTi UK Core Group consists of a group of volunteers and key organisations involved in infant feeding and infant and maternal health; all members of the Core Group (organisations and individual representatives) must submit a declaration that they are free of conflicts of interest. In the UK, a small Steering Group coordinates the assessment and works for implementation of its recommendations.
Working with her three colleagues she hopes to create “Actions for Change”, through implementation of the WBTi report recommendations, so the next generation of mothers are enabled to achieve their personal breastfeeding goals and that society better values the health-giving properties of human milk, as the physiologically normal food for babies, and therefore creating a healthier nation.
